Ahu Tepeu

King Tu'u Koihu's village

Ahu Tepeu is a land that was once home to a very important and influential village. Ariki Tu’u Koihu and Ava Rei Pua, the sister of Ariki Hotu Matu’a once lived there and you can still see the remains of their Hare Paenga, a massive 43m in length.

Ahu Te Peu is also the resting place of Ava Rei Pua, the sister of Hotu Matu’a. Ahu Tepeu and Ahu Akahanga, the resting place of Ariki Hotu Matu’a are on the axis of the Dawn of the Summer Solstice and of the Dusk of the Winter Solstice, connecting the two siblings even in death.

At Ahu Tepeu you will find the remnants of the village that was once there, there are large Manavai, Hare Moa, and the massive stone wall that was the back structure of Ahu Tepeu. Ahu Tepeu has never been restored and when you visit, it give you a real understanding of the sheer level of destruction that went on during the civil war.

Ahu Tepeu can be visited as part of a tour or you can go on your own. If you feel like a hike you can take the path that starts at Ahu Akivi which is called Te Ana (or the caves walk) another option is to take the path starting at Ahu Tahai, this is about 6km, and you will need to go there and come back to get back to Hanga Roa.
