1/171984: in Once Upon a Time in America
"Everything was new and magical, and it was like a fairy-tale movie set: sweeping sets and hundreds of people in these period costumes and horses and carriage.... It was my first time kissing a boy in that scene. So funny, the way I put my lips on his lips, and I remember it was such a big deal at the time. I was literally in tears after the scene. And if you look at it, it's the most chaste thing in the world."

"This was such a big deal. I was very excited to meet her, such an icon. There was lots of protocol. I was nervous. But she was lovely, as I remember. She was very kind and sweet to me. She was a princess!"

"Who could forget the hair, the wigs? I remember trying so hard to do the dancing well, and I just had no skill whatsoever. This was another experience that was so extraordinary. This was one of the last films where all of that stuff was really there. It wasn't done digitally: The sets were all there, all the puppets were there, and it was so creative. David Bowie was so generous and lovely with me, and I remember thinking that dress was very, very fancy. I think it was made out of Saran Wrap."

"[I was] staying in this place in the desert, and then there was a big casino right across the street, and a big sign with a cowboy, who kept waving, in lights right outside my window. It was so desolate there. One of those places where I'd sit on the bed and look out at that cowboy thinking, How did they get you here? What am I doing here?"

"[My son] Kai had just been born. [Before this], you can see that it's someone else's fantasy of me, not who I wanted to be. So that movie was really important for me. I loved the script; I loved Keith Gordon, who directed it; I loved Billy, working with him. We were filming in Montreal in the wintertime. It was a crazy year where they had some historic ice storm, and the city shut down, and we had to rehearse one day by candlelight. It was everything I always wanted moviemaking to be."

"I was a single mom raising—at that point, Kai was two, I think. And here's this girl running around town with her [heroin] habit and going on a very different path. But I just reveled in the opportunity to learn about her and gather stories, and I met some really interesting people. "I think everyone had curly hair in that movie. My husband [Paul Bettany] has very short, very straight hair. I think they gave him pin curls in that movie, too. Well, that was an amazing experience. It was so interesting on every level for me. I felt like we had like two weeks of rehearsals, which is just unheard of anymore to have that amount of time—unheard of for me, anyway."

"They were both really lovely. I don't think I had any scenes with Drew, but Jennifer was great—I loved her. The reality of those things is everyone comes in and does their part and then flies off. I said, 'Oh, it will be so great. We'll all work together,' and the most time we actually got to spend socializing was at the premiere."

"My husband and I already had children together; [it] was great being able to collaborate. [But] that movie was fraught with challenges, the biggest being that my dad had just died right before I started it. It was hard for that not to overshadow everything, even an experience like working with Paul."

"The experience was extraordinary. I was so proud of Paul that he had this idea and wrote this thing and got it made. That was a huge achievement, and he did a great job on it, he really did. It was an amazing part to play, and a really beautiful love story, I think, as well."
