Robert Kirkman, you've done it again. Invincible Vol. 12 just blew my mind, so I felt compelled to write this review literally minutes after finishing this volume, while the data's still fresh. Honestly, I can't praise this series enough! This recent volume (collecting the Invincible War and the Conquest storyarcs) is one of he best examples of the superhero genre since Spider-man first swung onto the pages of Amazing Fantasy. No other title combines teenaged angst and real-world responsibility with superheroics and family as well as Invincible, and probably never will. So how do I summarize what transpires in this TP without giving too much away? Easy. ACTION. All out bloody superhero ACTION.

In a nutshell, without giving away too many spoilers, Angstrom Levy, Invincible's Lex Luthor-like archvillain has transported evil alternate versions of our hero to our earth to jump-start the Apocalypse. Basically the entire Image universe has to rally around Invincible to stave off the threat, resulting in some pretty horrific carnage. As if that's not enough, CONQUEST comes calling. Who?? Nope, I'm not going to give away too much on that one either, except to say that the last couple of issues in this collection features the goriest, most intense superhero fight EVER! How Kirkman's ever gonna top this one, I wouldn't know...

Invincible Vol.12: Still Standing collects issues 60-65 of the phenomenal series and should not be missed by any comic book fan!

Oh, and before I forget, Ryan Ottley, you are a GOD among pencillers.

Just amazing. I have no other words. Kirkman & Ottley are a legendary team and this whole series will stand as one of the best superhero comics ever made.

I have never read a trade and been so happy doing it. I can honestly say that Invincible is not only my favorite comic but he is also I'm favorite superhero. As for Vol. 12, all I can say is headbutt. Scary scary headbutts.

this comic series never lets me down, I will be collecting them until they stop making them along with other of kirkmans series

Okay, so, wow. That was the most insane volume of this comic yet. And I feel like I've said that at least two other times, but it's true, and somehow Kirkman just keeps upping the ante. This one was all bite, no bark. He's all but bludgeoning us over the head for six issues in a row of non-stop, fast-paced, world-shattering storytelling. And, as if any of us have forgotten, we are reminded why Invincible must always be in contention for "most violent superhero comic" of all time.

The events herein surround Angstrom Levy's alternate-dimension Invincibles plan, and then run smack dab into a little visit to Earth by a Viltrumite named Conquest, and trust me, you cannot put this one down. The sequence of events is so intense that I was literally waiting for some plot device to be introduced that would reverse it all. It was just that crazy, that I thought surely it couldn't stand. Something would happen to make it all right again. How naïve of me, to doubt Robert Kirkman.

And also, it must be said as it has been said many times before, Ryan Ottley. This dude is putting in work. These are busy, busy panels. High action, an enormous cast of characters, complex movements and scenery, and he isn't just keeping up, he's nailing it. Big ups to inker Cliff Rathburn and colorist Fco Plascencia on this volume too. Just stellar work all around.

Around the halfway mark, this story is not wavering at all, as I once feared it would. I'm all in for this right now, eager to see what comes next.

Its the 12th volume in a great series. I suppose if you're looking at this you've already read the others, so I won't try to convince you to pick up the series as a whole. This one advances two of the major plotlines and introduces an intimidating new villain. It also has some tough goodbyes in it but overall its a worthy continuation of the story of Invincible.

Ended on a high note. One of the best (if not THE best) comic series I've read. I'll miss these characters, but I look forward to seeing how the show adapts the storyline. I may have to rewatch the first season for the third time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Invincible rules!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 5, 2010
Invincible is simply one of the very top super-hero titles around. It's slickly written by Robert Kirkman who manages a light deft touch even when going into some dark places. The artwork by Ryan Ottley is clear and stylish, managing to edge just onto the realistic side of cartoony. Together it's a winning combination.

Just to briefly explain the setup to Invincible newbies, Mark is the son of the world's most powerful hero who turns out to be an alien villain. As both himself and Invincible, Mark has a lot of growing up to do and a lot to deal with in terms of new enemies, new friends, and complicated relationships and it's all set in the Image Universe which allows for some fun teamups. And this comic is fun in a big way.

That said, this 12th trade paperback really darkens down the tone and it's the grimest installment so far. It begins with about 20 hostile Invincibles from alternate worlds invading Earth, one of whom specifically wants to kill Mark's girlfriend. In the aftermath of this disaster, matters get even worse with the arrival of Conquest, possibly the strongest of Mark's father's people. Now while I'm not one for issue-long super-hero fights -and this lasts for nearly three of them!- this is done really well and it's the darkest most violent and horrific installment of Invincible yet.

If you haven't tried Invincible before, don't start with this. Go and get the first one. If you have then you'll hardly be surprised to learn that this comes highly recommended.
