More than 400,000 people were in the audience at a performance by Dominican artist Juan Luis Guerra in Santa Cruz, capital of Tenerife, breaking the record for attendance at Carnival on the Canary Island.
The festivities on Saturday, which also included a performance by the Cuban group Orishas, broke the previous record, set in 1987 by a crowd of about 240,000 drawn by Celia Cruz. That concert has made the Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest outdoor concert in history at the time.
Guerra, who first performed his early hit “Ojala Que Llueva Café” and other songs in Tenerife 28 years ago, is an audience favorite on the island. The free concert last weekend “collapsed” the city of Santa Cruz, according to Spanish media outlets.
This year’s Tenerife Carnival, a bacchanal set to tropical music that lasts for two weeks, was dedicated to the “depths of the sea.”
