  • Did Blake divorce Amy in jail?
  • Where is Blake Fielder-Civil now?
  • Was Blake involved with Back to Black?

Back to Black might not have been a big hit with the critics, but it did manage to top the UK box office chart on its opening weekend.

The biopic focuses on Amy Winehouse's relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil, which inspired her seminal album of the same name. It's possible that, for some viewers, it might be the first time they've learned about their relationship

It's a more subjective view of their time together (with Marisa Abela playing Amy and Jack O'Connell as Blake), influenced by the lyrics of that album's songs rather than what we saw play out in the tabloids.

It is focused on that period in Amy's life, ending with her five Grammy wins in February 2008. As such, the last we see of Blake in the movie is when he asks Amy for a divorce when he's in jail.

You might be wondering what happened to Blake next as there's a small reference to his new girlfriend.

So here's where Blake Fielder-Civil is now, as well as whether he was involved in the movie at all and his thoughts on Back to Black.

Did Blake divorce Amy in jail?

The last scene in Back to Black between Amy and Blake sees him ask for a divorce while he was serving a jail sentence. Blake puts it down to the "toxic codependency" of their relationship, but this is a fictional account for the movie.

In real life, Blake claimed on The Jeremy Kyle Show in February 2013 that after he finished his jail sentence, "I was told that if I loved her, I'd divorce her and set her free".

What is accurate is that it was Blake who asked for a divorce. It was confirmed in January 2009 that he was seeking a divorce on the grounds of Amy's alleged infidelity, following photos of her in St Lucia with actor Josh Bowman.

In March 2009, Amy denied the allegations and said that she "won't let him divorce me". The pair ended up divorcing in July 2009 (via BBC News) and Blake said in July 2010 that he got "nothing" in the divorce.

They reunited after Blake was released from jail in 2010 and supposedly had plans to remarry. However, Blake was jailed in June 2011 for 32 months for burglary and a firearm offence.

He was in jail when Amy tragically died in July 2011. Blake didn't go to Amy's funeral and it was reported at the time that he was denied compassionate leave, while Amy's family apparently didn't want him to attend.

According to Sarah Aspin though, Blake "did not ask to be at Amy's funeral": "There is no way he would want to be there in handcuffs. He has too much respect for Amy and her family to do that."

Where is Blake Fielder-Civil now?

In one of the final scenes of Back to Black, the paparazzi attempt to get a rise out of Amy by mentioning Blake alongside "Sarah and their new baby".

As with other scenes in the movie, we don't know if this particular interaction actually took place, but it's a reference to Blake's now-ex-wife Sarah Aspin. They met while he was in rehab and later married, and they have two children together.

In July 2021, it was reported that Blake was engaged to his girlfriend Bay Wright (via Daily Mail), who he lived with in Leeds following his release from jail in 2013. But aside from a few media appearances, Blake has stayed away from the spotlight.

Blake appeared on Good Morning Britain in September 2023 on what would have been Amy's 40th birthday.

"I do [get blamed for Amy's death] and that's ok. I can't change what other people feel about that, but for me personally, I needed to stop carrying that burden. I've carried it for over 10 years," Blake explained.

"I'm the only person within that story that's ever held any accountability, I tried to say I made some huge mistakes. I was a 20-something old drug addict. I had no idea how to make myself clean, let alone someone else."

He added that he would have done "almost everything" differently in their relationship if he could. "I think about her all the time, I thought about her this morning when I said my happy birthday to her, she was my best friend," he continued.

"If it wasn't for certain factors I think it could have been a different outcome. Everything happened very quickly for Amy. We were young."

Blake made another Good Morning Britain appearance on the movie's release day (April 12, 2024) when he revealed he had seen Back to Black.

"It's a surreal experience, watching a film about somebody… you recognise that person, but it's not that person, the same for Jack [O'Connell] who played me as well. It was just surreal to watch," he explained.

"But when I'm watching it, I have to watch it firstly as somebody who I was married to, so I'm looking at it as somebody that wasn't just friends with Amy, we were married. We were together, we were deeply in love. Going from that to the addiction, there were some really difficult parts to process, but the upside of that is that it was almost therapeutic in a way."

Was Blake involved with Back to Black?

Back to Black doesn't portray Blake as the villain of the story like some expected, so it could lead you to question whether he was involved.

However, he wasn't creatively involved in the movie and neither were any of Amy Winehouse's estate. Like Eddie Marsan with Mitch Winehouse though, Jack O'Connell did meet with Blake ahead of filming and spent an afternoon with him.

"He was quite open. He spoke so highly of Amy. There was something so genuine in how he spoke, it was unquestionable to me that he loved her. That informed how I wanted to portray him," the actor recalled.

He added that Blake "wasn't overly keen" to meet him because "obviously it's going into a phase of his life that is very personal and he harbours a mixed bag of emotions".

Back to Black is out now in UK cinemas and arrives in US cinemas on May 17.
