Netflix has confirmed that Full House is to be revived nearly 20 years since its finale episode aired.

The sitcom was one of the most popular shows on US television in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but for those who have never seen a single episode, here's a handy guide to catch you up so far.

Original run

Full House ran on ABC for eight seasons from 1987 to 1995, airing 192 episodes in total, and was among the highest-rated TV series during its run.

What's it all about?

The series focused on news reporter Danny Tanner (Bob Saget), whose wife Pam was killed in a car crash by a drunk driver before the beginning of the show. He brings in his brother-in-law Jesse Katsopolis (John Stamos) and best friend Joey Gladstone (Dave Coulier) to help raise his three daughters DJ (Candace Cameron), Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin) and Michelle (Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen).

The six soon become a new family, and are later joined by Danny's TV co-host and eventually Jesse's wife Rebecca (Lori Loughlin), their twin sons Nicky and Alex (Blake and Dylan Tuomy-Wilhoit) and the family dog Comet. The main cast is completed by Kimmy Gibbler (Andrea Barber), DJ's best friend and the Tanners' annoying neighbour, and Steve Hale (Scott Weinger), DJ's on-off boyfriend.

The comedy followed the growing family through various relationships, parenting issues, growing pains, careers and everything else that comes with living in an unconventional home. Essentially, it was Modern Family for the 1980s and 1990s.

Who's who?

Danny Tanner begins as a sportscaster for a local TV station, before rising to be co-host for its morning talk show. He later dates Rebecca's maternity replacement Vicky Larson (Gail Edwards) and gets engaged in season six. However, they break up in season seven due to their long-distance relationship. He ends up with fellow single parent Claire Mahan (Andrea Abbate) in season eight.

Danny is best known for his obsession with cleaning and cleanliness, even cleaning his cleaning products at times. His family motto is "clean is good, dirt is bad", and is known as an "unhip dad". He is also a skilled pool and darts player and guitarist. His favourite song is Wild Cherry's 'Play That Funky Music'.

Jesse Katsopolis is Danny's late wife's younger brother. Born Hermes, he pleaded with his parents for the "cool name" of Jesse instead. Usually irresponsible compared to Danny, he steps up to protect his family when needed.

The high school dropout is obsessed with his hair and Elvis Presley, and owns a special comb called Mr Goodpart. He eventually marries Danny's co-host Rebecca and the pair have twin boys. He also ends up owning The Smash Club and kept up his hopes of making it big with his band Jesse and the Rippers.

Joey Gladstone is Danny's childhood best friend and later the adulthood best friend of Jesse. He works as a stand-up comedian, usually showing off his cartoon character impressions including Popeye and Pepe LePew. Initially sleeping in an alcove in Danny's living room, he later moves into the basement garage.

At times an immature man child, Joey usually takes on the day-to-day house responsibilities including making meals, driving the kids to school and helping them with their homework. He is later Jesse's best man at his wedding and the pair become co-hosts of a successful afternoon radio show called Rush Hour Renegades.

DJ Tanner is the oldest of the three girls. She is usually the most practical of the children, often giving advice to her siblings.

After entering high school, she soon began dealing with more serious issues including puberty and dating, and started her first serious relationship with Steve Hale. The pair eventually break up in season seven, but stay close friends. However, in the finale he returns to take her to prom and they share a kiss. Her best friend is the irritating neighbour Kimmy, her complete opposite that her father cannot stand.

Stephanie Tanner is the sarcastic middle child, whose catchphrases include, "How rude!" and "Hot dog". She became a tomboy by season four, and had a habit of spying on DJ by reading her diary and listening to her phone calls.

She dealt with some of the toughest issues at school, including smoking, peer pressure, make-out parties, joyriding and uncovering a friend's child abuse.

Michelle Tanner was played by both Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen at different stages. The youngest daughter was just a baby when her mother Pam died, and the character later became one of the main focuses of the show.

Her best friends Teddy and Denise appear more frequently in later seasons, as well as the bossy Aaron Bailey. Her many catchphrases included "You got it, dude!", "You're in big trouble, mister!", "Oh, puh-lease!", "Aw, nuts!", "Duh!", and, "No way, José!"

Rebecca Katsopolis is sarcastic and practical and worked with Danny at the TV station, and eventually marries Jesse, having been reluctant to admit her feelings about him at first.

She later moves in with the Tanners, Jesse and Joey when she realises how much Jesse misses his family, and they live together in the attic. She becomes a mother figure to the girls, and later gives birth to twin boys on Michelle's fifth birthday.

Kimmy Gibbler became a series regular in season five, and is DJ's best friend. Despite their differing personalities, they remained close throughout even with various bust-ups and fallouts over the years.

The majority of the Tanner house can't stand her, in particular Danny, Jesse and Stephanie, and she is known to be a poor student in school, often copying DJ's work. She is also mocked for her bad foot odour, and is addicted to shopping. Her only serious relationship was with Duane, whom she at one point tries to elope with to Reno.

Who's coming back?

Fuller House will focus on DJ, Stephanie and best friend Kimmy, with Candace Cameron-Bure, Jodie Sweetin and Andrea Barber all returning.

What's the new show all about?

DJ is now a veterinarian, and is pregnant and recently widowed, much like her father Danny in the first episode of Full House.

Her younger sister and aspiring musician Stephanie and best friend and single mother Kimmy move in to help take care of DJ's two boys and her expected baby. They are joined by Kimmy's feisty teenage daughter Ramona.

The journey to Fuller House

In 2008, Stamos first spoke of a reunion movie but later withdrew his plans as the cast were not available. The following year, he announced that a feature film was still in the pipeline.

Fast forward to August 2014, and rumours emerged of Warner Bros TV considering a series reboot. Led by Stamos, he joined original executive producer Bob Boyett and creator Jeff Franklin to develop the new show. In April, Netflix and Stamos announce a 13-episode series titled Fuller House, with the premiere expected in 2016.
