'Despacito' singer Luis Fonsi coming to El Paso

Puerto Rican singer-songwriter Luis Fonsi, who’s hit “Despacito” has enjoyed six straight weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart, is coming to El Paso, officials announced this week.

Tickets for the Sept. 13 concert at the Abraham Chavez Theatre Downtown are on sale and range in price from $59 to $296. Tickets are available at the Plaza Theatre Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 800-745-3000 and online at ticketmaster.com.

Fonsi is enjoying the biggest pop hit of his career thanks to the remix of “Despacito,” which includes guest vocals by Justin Bieber and Daddy Yankee.

Fonsi’s “Love + Dance World Tour” includes 14 U.S. dates, kicking off in Las Vegas, Nev., Sept. 8, before heading to Los Angeles, Phoenix and then El Paso. Other Texas dates include stops in Irving and San Antonio. The U.S. leg of the world tour wraps up Sept. 30 in Atlantic City.

Fonsi began his recording career in 1998 with the album, "Comenzaré.” The album was an instant hit on the Latin charts, kick-starting a career that now includes six platinum and one gold album. Three of Fonsi’s albums have shot to No. 1 on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart.

Fonsi has performed for Pope John Paul II and former-President Barack Obama.

“Despacito,” featuring Daddy Yankee, was released in January and reached the top-spot on nearly every Billboard Latin music chart and the accompanying video surpassing two billion views on YouTube. In April, a remix, featuring Bieber was released, turning the song into a pop crossover smash and giving Fonsi and Daddy Yankee their first No. 1 song on the Hot 100.
