The dress, the theme — “Charles James: Beyond Fashion” — and of course the client were the guiding forces for hairstylist Robert Vetica and makeup artist Christophe Danchaud when creating Marion Cotillard‘s standout look for this year’s Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala.
“Marion is a muse in every way,” longtime hairstylist Vetica told Pret-a-Reporter. He felt the navy Christian Dior gown deserved a complementary hairstyle with a bit of a retro feel, which he achieved with all-over volume and the edge that flipped back toward the ear. Vetica, owner of the eponymous salon at SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills, said the severe low side part, intense shine and twist around the back added to the “edgy but chic look” of his Oscar-winning client.

Beautifully complementing the hairstyle and dress was the makeup — Danchaud used products entirely from L.A.-based brand Hourglass. He said, “The dress makes a graphic statement and we complemented it with glowing skin, iridescent eyes and richly pigmented lips.” He started by prepping the star’s complexion with No. 28 Primer Serum (No. 6), followed by Veil Fluid Makeup (No. 5), Hidden Corrective Concealer in Pearl, and Ambient Lighting Powder in Dim Light applied all-over the face. He used a golden fuchsia blush [Radiant Magenta (No. 3)] for a natural flush of color on the cheeks. For the eyes, he applied a shimmery lilac shade all over eyelids and contoured the corners and lines of the eye with mauve shadow [both from the Visionaire Shadow Duo in Exhibition (No. 1)]. To make the eyes pop, he topped with gold pigment and several coats of Film Noir Full Spectrum Mascara. The stand-out element of the look was the orange-red lip color, courtesy of a trio of products: Panoramic Long Wear Lip Liner in Raven (No. 7) topped with Femme Rouge Velvet Creme Lipstick in Rave and Muse (No. 4).
“She’s a confident woman who felt beautiful,” Vetica told us. “I think people could feel that.”
