In 1567, King Eric XIV imprisoned seven nobles at Uppsala Castle. The king suspected that those nobles were plotting to take power from him, three people from the family Sture thus lost their lives: Svante Stensson and his sons Nils and Erik. The widow and mother Märtha Leijonhufvud took care of the clothes the family had been wearing when they were murdered and put them in a chest where they were preserved and are the only complete men's habits from the Renaissance remaining today.
