4-19-24 republicans file lawsuit challenging ever’s partial vetoes to literacy bill

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Republican lawmakers have filed a new lawsuit alleging partial vetoes Gov. Tony Evers made to a bill designed to bolster students’ reading performance were unconstitutional. Evers signed a bill in July that created an early literacy coaching program within the state Department of Public Instruction as well as grants for schools that adopt approved reading curricula. The bill didn’t appropriate any money, however. Evers signed another bill in February that calls for the Legislature’s budget committee to spend $50 million to fund the July bill, but vetoed sections of it. Republicans argue in their lawsuit that Evers overstepped his powers because the February bill doesn’t actually appropriate any money. They filed the suit Tuesday in Dane County.
