      Season 1 – The Killing

      2011 Crime Drama List
94% 36 Reviews Tomatometer 90% 500+ Ratings Audience Score Based partly on a popular Danish TV series, "The Killing" is a moody, character-driven detective procedural that weaves a murder mystery through a full season or more. The stories unfold through the eyes of Sarah Linden, a detective with the Seattle Police Department and who, at first, must mentor Detective Stephen Holder, a former narcotics cop. While their backgrounds produce investigative styles that clash -- she's by-the-book, he's freewheeling -- they manage to pull together for the case. Critics Consensus

The Killing is a slow burning mystery with an eerie, mutli-dimensional story propelled by thoughtful writing, believable characters, and realistic horror, even if its season finale was unsatisfying.

Jess Mccabe Bitch Media It seems like [US writers] didn't have enough confidence in the character and they needed to add layers of backstory and angst to spell out that Linden is a great detective but just cannot cope. Perhaps it's also a lack of confidence in the audience. Jan 8, 2021 Full Review Tim Goodman San Francisco Chronicle The series is excellent, absorbing and addictive. When each episode ends, you long for the next - a hallmark of great dramas. Nov 13, 2018 Full Review Starlee Kine New York Magazine/Vulture Now that the Killing has been true to its word about solving its mystery in a single season, if it does come back again, I hope that it keeps in mind that its appeal lies far more in its characters than in its twists. Rated: F Feb 12, 2020 Full Review David Bianculli NPR's Fresh Air The Killing is intentionally slow, and doesn't provide any of the usual staples of the genre as high-octane relief. No gun battles, no car chases - just cops doing their duty, politicians looking for ways to spin things. Dan F While it grows tedius at times, this is a superbly acted character study about the murder of a child and how it impacts that family. In many ways, it reminded us of Broadchurch, which IMHO, is the best ever British murder mystery. However, the major problem with the Killing is that the mystery is not solved until the end of the 2nd season. 26 episodes is simply too many for a single crime story. That's over 19 hours. At the end of the 1st season, we think that the crime has been solved, but then there's a cliff hanger of an ending, so we begin again with season 2. Frankly, after 2 episodes of season 2, we skipped to the final episode just to find out who did it. All the actors and acting are terrific. But, they should have been more careful and because of the casting, I guessed who did it while watching the 1st episode of season 1. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/24 Full Review Christian T A slow burner series, I'm almost at the end of the 1st season and I have no clue to who the perpetrator is. Every time I think I've worked something out, it goes another way. But let me tell you, it's utterly gripping, literally cannot stop watching it Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/26/24 Full Review Luke P The Killing (S1) is the best written TV I've maybe ever seen. Up there with shows like True Detective (S1) & Breaking Bad (S1-S4). Truly fantastic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/23/23 Full Review Bruno V Mudei de opinião. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/21/23 Full Review Mike C Only finished season one so far but I'll definitely be tuning in for the rest. It is definitely a slow burn but I'm assuming things will pick up. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/09/23 Full Review sara g I'm a little late on The Killing and I am blown away. The tone, acting, plots twists. This is perfect, dark drama. So many red herrings. This is a dreary yet impeccable experience Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
