Biography

  • Hombres G (formed in 1982) is a popular Spanish pop and rock four-piece who made their debut with the single “Devuelveme A Mi Chica”, hailing from Madrid, Spain.

Named after the American film “G-Men”, Hombres G was originally formed by guitarist Daniel Mezquita, drummer Javier Molina, and singer/bassist David Summers. Second guitarist Rafael Gutierrez joined shortly afterwards completing the lineup, after which the group made their performance debut at Madrid’s Rock-Ola in 1983. Adopting the sound of the time, influenced by new wave and melodic pop, Hombres G recorded an early demo “Millagro En El Congo” in 1984, which resulted in the group inking a deal with Twins Records that year.

The band released their eponymously-titled debut album in 1985, spawning Hombres G’s commercial breakthrough single “Devuélveme a mi chic”. The single rose to international success for its playful, accessible nature and resulted in a Peruvian airport runway nearly being closed due to an excess of fans congregating there upon the band's arrival. The full-length “La cagiest… Burt Lancaster” arrived in 1986 boasting more mature themes and sounds then the debut, as did its follow-up 1987’s “Estamos locos…¿oqué?”. Following the release the band embarked on a relentless world tour of bull rings and arenas with an estimated one million people seeing Hombres G perform that summer. Also in 1987 the group starred in their first autobiographical film “Sufré mamón”, directed by Daivd’s father Maneul Summers.

A fourth album “Agitar antes de usar” was released in 1988 highlighting the group’s rock and roll and ballad influences, later spawning the single “Suéltate el pelo”. A year later “Voy a pasármelo bien” hit the shelves marking their most mature album to date, followed in 1990 by “Ésta es tu vida”, which featured orchestration from the London Symphony Orchestra. Following the release of their 1992 album “Historia del bikini”, produced by Colin Feirley, Hombres G announced they were taking a hiatus.

That hiatus would last until 2002 when Hombres G released the full-length “Peligrosamente Juntos”, after which the group embarked on a tour of Spain, Latin America, and the U.S. The band’s tenth album, appropriately titled “10” was issued in 2007 topping the Spanish Album Chart upon release. Compared with the likes of Coldplay and U2, the album earned a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Album By A Duo or Group with Vocal and received a host of favourable reviews. Hombres G’s subsequent release, 2010’s “Desayuno Continental” spawned the singles “El secreto de vivir” and “Vete de mi”, and was followed in 2011 with full-length “En la playa”.

Live reviews

  • My cousin had brought me to a Latin music concert, and even with the language barrier I fully enjoyed myself. Hombre G was a great performer, and his music was enticing and interesting. It was like a mix of rock and blues, and I could tell that the crowd really enjoyed him and his music. My cousin and I had a really great time drinking some tequila and coronas, to try and get in the mood you know, and going out and being surrounded by a lively group of concert goers and some really upbeat and fun music. It felt like it went on forever, which I suppose could have been because of the drinks or because of the actual set list, but it wasn't a bad thing! We had so much fun I wish that it had went on even longer. There seemed to be a lot of audience involvement, like I said I don't speak a lick of Spanish so I wasn't really able to participate like everyone else but it was still a great time. Overall, the show was fantastic and the crowd experience was really intense and fun with people dancing and singing along. I would definitely recommend even if you won't understand the lyrics.

  • Spanish rock outfit Hombres G have definitely cracked the universal appeal to their live show as despite there often being a language barrier as they tour the States and Europe, they have the whole venue involved in their latin inspired stomping tracks. The group formed more than 30 years ago however they took a decade long hiatus between 1992 and 2002 much to the distress of the fanbase however now they are back on the road and playing all the old classics along with some new recorded material.

The new songs go down well, helped partly due to the enthusiasm of frontman David Summers who stands proudly at the front of the stage and awaits the big cheers from the crowds. It is great to see all five original musicians agreed to the reform so you are seeing the Hombres G from their 80s heyday. They close on a particularly large track entitled 'Te quiero' which features some of the biggest riffs heard tonight and is a clear highlight for the majority there.

  • They were great! High energy and they still sound wonderful! The screen at the venue seemed to be very glitchy though. Overall sound was great and the atmosphere for the most part was quite inviting.
