Biography

  • Hailing from Sinaloa, Mexico, Ana Gabriel (born December 10th, 1955) is a Mexican singer and composer, enjoying a career that has lasted over three decades, with several chart-topping hits in the Latino-pop scene.

Ana Gabriel first took to the stage at the age of six, performing José Alfredo Jiménez’s “Regalo A Dios,” which began Ana’s love of singing and performing. Having grown up around music, she was supported by her parents to move to Tijuana, Mexico, in order to study accounting and also pursue a career in singing. At the age of 21, Gabriel was given her lucky break, recording her first song in 1977, “Compréndeme.” Gabriel then impressed at the local festival, Valores Juveniles (Youthful Values), where she came second place through her performance of “No Me Lastimes Mas.” In 1987, she competed at Lisbon, Portugal’s OTI Festival, reaching third place. Subsequently, her orchestral version of the ballad, “Ay Amor” was released as a single, reaching the top of the charts in Mexico, as well as on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks chart for 14 weeks in a row.

From here on, her music career moved into full swing, releasing her debut album, “Tierra de Nadie” in 1988. Over 20 years later, Gabriel had released 20 studio albums, three live albums and 15 compilation albums, achieving three number one albums and seven number one singles in the process. She has risen to become one of the most beloved pop stars in Latin music, topping the charts throughout her career with her beautiful, soulful voice, with music that moved between latin pop, rancheros and latin rock, as well as featuring tender mariachi ballads with just a guitar as accompaniment.

Gabriel has won several awards throughout her career, including a Grammy Award nomination, four Latin Grammy Award nominations and thirteen Lo Nuestro Awards. She won ‘Best Pop Female Artist’ at the Lo Nuestro Awards two years running in 1991 and 1992, as well as receiving an ‘Excellence Award’ in 2006, commemorating her long career and her many successes as an artist. She has also won the Billboard Latin Music Estrella Award, in 2002, recognising again her contributions to the Latin music industry.

Live reviews

  • Ana Gabriel

With a career approaching its 40th anniversary and countless records sold worldwide, vocalist and songwriter Ana Gabriel is one of Mexico's most internationally recognised artists. Often performing lavish arrangements of her much loved latino pop, the tickets go fast so if you want a good seat you have to be on the ball when Ana comes to town.

A huge hit across Latin and South America, the crowds chatter wildly ahead of Gabriel's performance and go crazy as the live band file onto stage. The lights drop and a spotlight is placed for Ana to rightly step beneath. She looks stunning in a floor length gown which does not once stop her moving around the stage in order to greet the whole room. Her voice is powerful and upbeat all at once and shows incredible versatility as she moves between ballads to pop numbers with a total freedom. When watching Ana live you realise why she has been so critically acclaimed through her career and has such a huge following, she oozes star quality yet attains a sense of humbleness which is refreshing.

  • Ana Gabriel hails from Mexico, and has made quite a name for herself amongst her Latin Pop contemporaries. She knows immediately knows how to work this audience, and knows that she could probably just sing, and just with her voice she could carry the weight of this huge set, in this huge venue. Opening with “Soy Como Soy” the vibe of this evening is definitely set with a huge reaction from the audience, as they sing along in Spanish to this huge set opener. “A Pesar De Todos” has this audience by this point in her set, on their feet doing all the participation that they can with claps, dancing, ohh’s and ahh’s. It is no surprise with this huge atmosphere that she has had three albums reach number one on the Billboard Latin Pop Albums chart, and seven singles reach number one on the Billboard Latin Pop Songs chart, as she performs this evening delivering an hour an forty minutes of utter brilliance.

  • Ana Gabriel is a great artist with a unique voice and music that brings fun to the stage. I have my partner translate a lot of what she said in between songs and she is humble, sweet, funny and gracious with a voice that leaves you wanting more…The venue was good and she sang for almost 2 and ½ hours and started on time…love her!
