Biography

  • David Bisbal (born June 5, 1979) is a Spanish Grammy-winning Latin pop singer-songwriter and actor from Almería, Andalucía, in Spain.

Bisbal, born the youngest of three siblings, showed a talent for singing and performing at a very young age although his shyness tended to get in the way. After dropping out of secondary education and working as a Ranger with his father in the municipal nursery in Almería, Spain, Bisbal me the producer of the Orchestra Expressions, who offered the young singer the position of main voice in the orchestra.

In 2001 Bisbal came runner-up on a Pop Idol styled talent show named “Operación Triunfo” after which the stardom allowed the singer to release his debut album “Corazón Latino”. The album shot straight to number one, produced the hits “Ave María” and “Lloraré las Penas” and won Bisbal his first Latin Grammy for Best New Artist in 2003. Bisbal’s subsequent albums all proved to maintain this level of success with every studio album hitting the top of the Spanish album chart. 2004’s “Bulería” featured the No. 1 hits “Oye El Boom” and “Camina Y Ven” and has been certified 10x platinum, and 2006’s “Premonición”, produced the No. 1 hits “Silencio” and “Torre De Babel” and has been certified 5x platinum. The more recent 2009 album “Sin Mirar Atrás” and 2014’s “Tú y Yo” whilst not having such enormous sales as Bisbal’s earlier releases have cemented the singer’s successful blueprint for chart success.

On top of his studio albums, Bisbal has released a string of live albums including an entire live performance of his 2006 album “Premonición”, a recording of his show at the Royal Albert Hall in London, UK and an acoustic live album “Una Noche En El Teatro Real”, which won Bisbal another Latin Grammy Award in 2012. Such popular appeal has led the singer to work with international artists including Rihanna on the Spanglish version of her single “Hate That I Love You (Odio Amarte) and with the British singer Pixie Lott on a Spanish duet titled "Sufriras".

Live reviews

  • David Bisbal

Oh, for Pete’s sake. Why can’t we Brits have TV Talent show contestants like this? The vast majority of ours, even the ones who are pretty good, seem to be predestined to spend their glory days singing in Butlins Holiday Camps the country over even as they perform their very first audition. But overseas we can see legitimate rock and pop stars coming from these shows without even winning! Almeria, Andalucia’s very own David Bisbal came second in the 2001 edition of Spanish Pop Idol Clone Operación Triunfo, and since then has gone from strength to strength, singing duets with everyone from Jessica Simpson to Pixie Lott to Rihanna, winning a Grammy in 2003 and all the while, playing absolutely outrageous live shows whenever and wherever he can. We are most definitely not talking about the budgeted, almost amateurish showings that we see on this side of the pond either. A David Bisbal show has everything from an absolutely barn burning backing band with guitarists, backing vocalists and a brass section, a light show that would put Pink Floyd to shame, pyrotechnics and, most importantly, a showman par excellence in the form of Bisbal himself. His voice is a thing of wonder, as is his effortless charisma, and he’s kept that up through 13 years of constant performing. Yes he may come from a talent show, but he’s as real as real gets. Highly recommended.
