Ron Perlman wants to return for Hellboy 3

Ron Perlman starred as Hellboy in 2004 and 2008, and is keen to reprise the role

Ron Perlman says he wants to return for Hellboy 3.

Perlman brought the much-loved character to life in 2004's Hellboy, and then again four years later in Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Check out the trailer for the first movie:

And for the past 15 years, there's been talk of a third installment of the hit comic book movie to round off Guillermo del Toro's trilogy.

Sadly for fans of the red musclebound beast, however, it's never come to pass.

If you're not that familiar with the comics or the movies, Hellboy was originally created by artist Mike Mignola.

The story centres on a demon baby sucked out of another dimension by the Nazis and becomes part of a supernatural task force that saves the world.

A synopsis for the first movie reads: "At the end of World War II, the Nazis attempt to open a portal to a paranormal dimension in order to defeat the Allies, but are only able to summon a baby demon who is rescued by Allied forces and dubbed 'Hellboy' (Perlman).

"Sixty years later, Hellboy serves as an agent in the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, where he, aided by Abe Sapien (Doug Jones), a merman with psychic powers, and Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), a woman with pyrokinesis, protects America against dark forces."

But instead of a third movie in the series, a few years ago, we were treated to a reboot of the franchise, with Stranger Things' Hopper, David Harbour, taking over from Perlman.

The film was absolutely slammed by fans and critics alike, and currently has a score of just 17 percent, according to Rotten Tomatoes.

So, understandably, there's still a desire among the fanbase for Perlman to get back behind the wheel and go for another spin in the trench coat.

And it looks like the man himself is more than interested in teaming back up with del Toro.

Speaking about his movie How I Got There, the topic was broached, and Perlman admitted that it was actually supposed to be a trilogy in the first place.

He said: "If we were to make the third movie of the trilogy, I would love to do that, yeah.

"It was meant to be three movies, so... I would go back and do it, if we could finish the trilogy. But those are the only circumstances."

It's not the first time he's spoken about a potential return, though.

Last year, he was interviewed by the Independent, and asked if he was 'eager' to reprise the role.

"Am I eager to do Hellboy 3? No, I’m 71 f**king years old," Perlman, who is now 73, replied.

"We owe this to the fans and we should give it to them because it would be an epic conclusion.

"So Guillermo, if you’re reading, I’m not done pounding you to get this f**king thing done."

Listen to the man, Guillermo.
