For months, rumors have been swirling around what we really, really want: a Spice Girls reunion this year. We heard whispers of a tour, or that maybe they were planning a reality TV talent show. We’ve been squirreling away any funds that haven’t already gone to the On the Run II tour for whatever form the Spice renaissance might take—and the answer might be mercifully easy on the wallet: an animated superhero movie.
Variety is reporting that the Spice Girls are shopping an animated film project, writing that “according to a source, all five members of the group have signed off on their likenesses being used for a superhero-themed movie working off of the ‘girl power’ message.” Victoria Beckham, Melanie Chisholm, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, and Geri Halliwell will reportedly voice their characters, who will each have a “girl power” unique to their personality. Spice fans will remember that the delightfully surrealist Spice World movie saw the Spice Girls meet with a band of frisky aliens, so a film in which the fivesome saves the world is a logical next step.
The news follows a Spice Girls reunion that took place at the Hertfordshire home of Geri Horner, née Halliwell, aka Ginger Spice. The weekend was documented for fans on Instagram, who were understandably sent into Spice hysteria. Present also was former Spice Girls manager Simon Fuller, which prompted serious reunion tour rumors; addressing the speculation, the group released a collective statement via Jo Milloy: “We have enjoyed a wonderful afternoon catching up and reminiscing about the amazing times we have spent together. . . . We are always overwhelmed at how much interest there is across the whole world for the Spice Girls.” It ended by confirming that, yes, something might be happening, but without saying what that something is. “The time now feels right to explore some incredible new opportunities together,” they said through Milloy. “We all agree that there are many exciting possibilities that will once again embrace the original essence of the Spice Girls, while reinforcing our message of female empowerment for future generations.”

Beckham soon shut down the idea that there would be a Spice Girls tour, instead saying that any future project would be about reclaiming the Spice Girls legacy. “There’s something so strong in the message of what the Spice Girls stood for,” she told British Vogue. Of Spice World, she said, “I remember that movie. I was so upset when they made me wear that tight little army dress. And Harper Beckham, who’s only watched Spice World once, says, ‘Mummy, I love that bit when everyone’s in the really cool clothes, and you’re in the tight little army dress!’ . . . I think there’s so much that the brand can do, and it’s such a positive message for young kids. What does that look like in the future? It’s not me in a catsuit.” So now we know: The future might look like Posh Spice in a cape.
