When Claire Foy first appeared as a young Queen Elizabeth in the Netflix series The Crown last November, viewers were transfixed. Foy embodied a young Queen Elizabeth so well, and gave a glimpse inside incredibly personal aspects of Her Majesty’s life. The series premieres with the then-Princess Elizabeth’s wedding to the future Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and traverses such sensitive ground as the death of her father, King George VI, and her relationships with her husband and her sister, Princess Margaret. Throughout it all, it was hard not to wonder, Has The Queen seen this?!

The answer, it surprisingly turns out, is yes. A “senior royal source” has said that the queen watched all of season one. And better yet, the queen reportedly liked the show. So how exactly did this happen? Prince Edward, the queen’s youngest son, and his wife, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, love The Crown, and have long-since dined with the queen while casually watching television or a movie. Apparently, they finally convinced Her Majesty to give the show a try. What’s more, Princess Eugenie and Zara Tindell, both granddaughters of the queen, have been quoted as saying that they are huge fans of the show. A growing consensus amongst the Windsors seems to be underway. Who knows, perhaps even Kate Middleton will test the streaming-service waters of a Netflix account one day.
