Mario Kart: Double Dash!! News
One of the rare games I ever pre-ordered. Wanted to make sure I could get a copy at Gamestop on launch day. It was totally worth it. DD has some of the most inventive levels in the series (Dino Dino, anyone?) They just had fun with it. I spent countless hours playing with 2 or 3 buddies. I loved how it kept track of how many times you took first place, second place, etc in a play session with local multiplayer. It made things fun.
And Baby Park...that level with 3 friends....so many memories. It's also one of the few games I ever played with my dad - I'd drive and he'd throw items and punch people. I love this game.

Mario Kart: Double Dash!! introduces a fresh twist to the Mario Kart series on the GameCube platform. One of its novel features is the ability for two characters to share a kart and switch positions mid-race. Each character possesses distinct items, like the formidable Bowser Shell capable of causing chaos on the track. However, the game isn’t without its shortcomings. Notably, it omits classic tracks from earlier installments and presents challenges when it comes to driver swapping. Nevertheless, the game's innovative approach offers a unique and creative experience for old and new players.
i totally get the appeal of this game, the controls have this cool unique feel to them, the two-racer mechanic makes strategizing super engaging, the super items are lit, the co-op mode is genius, battle mode is solid, i love the more intense feel of this game, the graphics are charming as hell, the stages are bangers, it’s all really good… but the best mario kart game in the series???? really???????
don’t get me wrong, those aspects are GREAT but as you go on with this game, it starts to get kinda boring and frustrating.
the controls are cool and all but i feel like they could’ve made turning a bit more tight. making small adjustments in this game is a NIGHTMARE, as an example, when i tap left to get this nearby mushroom or something, i get sent more to the right and i end up missing the mushroom. this game is simply too slippery to control, you don’t have very good control at fine tuning your direction, especially at full speed so its really easy to accidentally fall off stages or miss item boxes.
you could say that the fact that there are only 16 courses makes the game more replayable but the lack of variety makes it feel far more repetitive to the point where it sorta becomes a slog later on.
this is a great and undeniably unique entry in the series that i can see myself coming back to occasionally, but it isn’t my favorite. i personally recommend you complete the first two ccs and then dip because unless you are that hooked with the controls, it’s not worth playing beyond that.
